Mobile, Ala. – Downtown Mobile will soon be a little brighter thanks to a collaboration between The Jake Peavy Foundation and Mobile Arts Council.

The two nonprofits worked together to bring national muralist Skye Walker (yes, that’s his real name) to create Mobile’s newest mural as part of the “Sea to Sea Mural Tour.” The project is one of several under the Peavy Foundation’s “Create Change” mural program and will start on Thursday, January 24.

“We are very excited to welcome Skye to Mobile.” said Jake Peavy, Founder of the Jake Peavy Foundation. “Mobile has always been known as a city deeply rooted in its culture, and we believe this new mural will be a great addition to the visual scene downtown. Our hope is that it will not only inspire our local talent but also engage our community for years to come.”

As part of the project, area students with an interest in an art career will assist Walker bring his vision to life: a mural that celebrates Mobile’s history, wildlife, and uniqueness. The colorful work of art will be located on a newly renovated building at the corner of Dauphin and Warren Streets.

“We’re grateful to the Jake Peavy Foundation for being instrumental in making this project happen,” says Shellie Teague, executive director of Mobile Arts Council. “Not only do we get to provide learning opportunities for professional artists and youth, Mobile gets a new work of public art that celebrates our community. It’s a win-win.”

Artists and anyone else interested are invited to participate in Walker’s free mural workshop on Saturday, January 26 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Cedar Street Social Club, located at 4 North Cedar Street. Walker will discuss the art and business of creating large-scale murals across the country.

The mural will be dedicated at a special ribbon cutting on Wednesday, February 6 at 11 a.m.
