Mobile Arts Council Services and Activities

Mission: to promote, coordinate and develop activities in connection with the arts.

MAC promotes and provides information

--maintains a website, including a list of member organizations with links to their websites and a calendar of events
--publishes ArtStart, a weekday e-message listing the day’s (and next day’s) events, as well as other arts information
--provides information to organizations and individuals via phone and e-mail (e.g. funding opportunities, available workshops, promotional opportunities)
--collects information for the Mobile Register’s annual season preview
--publishes an annual Arts-in-Education directory for teachers
--stages an annual Showcase of the Arts
--recognizes contributions to the arts with annual awards
--represents the arts community at events (e.g. the Chamber of Commerce Business Expo, the Mobile Museum of Art’s Educators Night Out, the City’s Lighting of the Christmas Trees)
--represents the arts community via print and broadcast media (including three regular appearances on WHIL-FM: a Friday calendar, calendar spots on Catt’s Sunday Jazz Brunch and a monthly noon-hour interview)
--represents the arts community in presentations to civic and other organizations
--represents the arts community in community organizations (e.g. Mobile United, Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association, Mobile Area Association of Realtors)
--serves as an advocate to city, county and state government and the public schools
--represents Mobile in state and national organizations (e.g. Alabama Alliance for Arts Education, Arts Are Core, Americans for the Arts)


MAC develops and coordinates programs

--conducts professional development workshops for teachers
--conducts workshops, seminars and conferences for artists and art organizations
--provides funding for projects based on an annual competitive application process
--provides in-school programs (including artists-in-residence and performances)
--displays art in its Skinny Gallery
--sponsors and co-sponsors programs (e.g. ArtsAlive!)
--convenes formal and informal meetings of people involved in or interested in the arts (e.g. Art After Hours)
--manages ArtBreakers
--provides/ coordinates training and experience for individuals interested in working in the arts


MAC provides technical services to arts organizations

--acts as fiscal agent
--serves as box office
--provides use of bulk mailing permit
--provides use of post office box
--provides meeting space
--provides use of a photocopy machine
--acts as consultant (e.g. on grant writing, public relations)
--acts as coordinator for organizations working together

MAC provides other services as requested/ needed
