Artist Statement:
I don't think of my work as realism. My interests lie in composition, patterns, reflections, and a kind of surrealism. Sometimes odd points of view will cause the viewer to look at the "real" world in a new way. Normal areas of observation can seem surreal this way, or can seem surreal when isolated from their surroundings. I especially like the complexities of water and glass, and, more recently, floral elements. People in my work are rarely portraits; I like to suggest, but not TELL, a story.
Description of Work:
There are no lines in my drawings; I prefer the delicate tonal graduations of the stipple method, using technical pens, usually #000. I often leave a part of the drawing suggested rather than totally detailed, to give the viewer the responsibility of thinking about the negative space. This translates in acrylic paintings to a gradual build-up of color through thin acrylic glazes and dry brushing. I use very small brushes corresponding to the size of the pens used for drawing. I less often leave "unfinished" areas in the paintings, instead using very dark areas to make the colors stronger.
